The Kentucky Center is opening its doors to celebrate their 25th Anniversary Season with Curtain's Up Community Day sponsored by Fifth Third Bank on Sunday, October 12, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will feature exciting performances, artists and exhibits, including involvement by all of our resident companies including The Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Ballet, Kentucky Opera, Stage One and Louisville Theatrical Association.

There'll be fun, activities, demonstrations, performances, displays, exhibits and it's all free! With free parking, too! Concessions on sale. 25-cent drinks for kids.

KentuckyShow!
Experience the people, sights and sounds of the state woven together in a high-definition production that will excite your senses and steal your heart. This 30-minute, breathtaking, multimedia show explores the ways Kentucky's past, present and choices for the future converge to create an utterly unique and powerfully engaging place. KentuckyShow! is destined to become one of the major attractions in the state. It's a first-see for visitors and a must-see for Kentuckians.

Juicy Lucy - The Glass Blowing Truck from Glassworks (weather permitting)
Imagination meets 2000 degrees Fahrenheit at the Glassworks Mobile Glassblowing Studio, the first ever mobile studio all self-contained in a van. Come watch the artists create magnificent works of art from molten glass, or try your hand at doing it yourself with the assistance of the Glassworks artists!

Ann Lawson Adamek, watercolor demonstrations
A native of Louisville, Ann began painting watercolors in 1989 after she became aware that her creativity had been "sorely neglected". A Marriage and Family Therapist by profession, Ann considers her painting to be her therapy. Although she has had no formal training in art, she has attended numerous workshops and is a member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society. She has won awards in local and regional watercolor exhibits, and twice she had paintings accepted in Aqueous, a national juried exhibition sponsored by the Kentucky Watercolor Society.

The Gallery at The Kentucky Center

Community Mural Project.
Create a colorful mosaic design to contribute to our community mural. A large scale panel will be setup along the corridor, and participants will be encouraged to contribute a small personalized element to the whole of the community mural using art supplies provided. The community mural activity will be guided by a hired artist and/or youth volunteers with visual art/hands-on family activity experience. Participants can spend as little or much time as they wish.

Costume Display
Costumes from the Louisville Ballet, the Kentucky Opera, and Stage One with live music to enchant from musical ensembles provided by Governor's School for the Arts alumni.

Matchbox Sculptures
Sculpt your own matchbox assemblage inspired by the artwork of Louise Nevelson. It's a hands-on visual art sculpture activity related to the various assemblage artworks in the permanent collection. You can spend as little or much time as you wish. You will also be able to take your completed work of art home.

Marvelous Mask Making
Craft your own mask and get into character by playing a part in hands-on drama activities. Families will participate in a hands-on mask-making activity guided by artists. You can spend as little or much time as they wish. Once you have completed your mask, you can proceed up the nearby stairs to the Balcony Southwest area where you will participate in interactive, creative drama activities with a professional theater educator. You will also be able to take your completed mask home.

Family Story & Music Workshops
Louisville Orchestra education staff members lead children and families in this interactive music and story hour as students create their own musical sound effects to provide music for each story. Vocal sounds, percussion instruments, and imagination are used to involve the whole family in musical storytelling.

Merlin the Magician, Tom Crecelius
Tom is a magician and a member of the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He currently serves as the secretary of the Louisville Magic Club. Tom has performed as Merlin for the Derby Festival, the Frazier Arms Museum opening, Churchill Downs and the Pegasus Parade, His favorite magician? Merlin, naturally, who also resembles Leonardo Da Vinci in looks!

Stage One Performance
Catch a glimpse into Stage One's current season showcasing the dynamic range of story and style of theatre for young audiences. Performance to feature excerpts from Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Homer's The Odyssey, including a Q&A with Stage One actors and staff.

Finding Your Inner Zombie
Prepare for Stage One's Halloween production of the horror classic Night of the Living Dead at Iroquois Amphitheater by attending this fun, interactive zombie characterization workshop, where the walking, talking, moaning, and groaning of the undead will be discovered then dissected.

Violinist Anne Rudolph (Denver), violist Alisson Reber (Lexington), and cellist Erin Cassel (Nashville) have been studying and performing music as ensemble Trio Politan at the University of Louisville since fall 2007. Coached by Paul York, the trio has competed in the MacCauley Chamber Music Competition, performed in several university concerts and at local events, and presented a full chamber music recital. Alisson Reber is grateful for the important lessons she learned and the friendships she made at the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts in 2002.

In this workshop, you'll enjoy a short demonstration of Flamenco with Diana Dinicola with Flamenco Louisville. Then you'll be up on your feet to try Flamenco rhythms and dance moves yourself. Founded in 1993 by Louisvillian Edward White, the River City Drum Corps is a group of children and young adults between the ages of 2 and 18 who have been trained in African drumming techniques and materials as well as the richness of African culture. GSA Alumni -EQ TRIO
The EQ Trio is a contemporary jazz ensemble that is based out of Louisville. The group's focus is on creating and performing original music that while rooted in the traditions of jazz draws inspiration from all styles including rock, hip-hop and r&b. To compliment the original music the EQ TRIO also plays tunes from the classic American jazz songbook, implementing their own interpretations and arrangements. The EQ Trio is includes saxophonist Drew Miller (GSA alumna), bassist Brian Vinson, and drummer Mike Hyman.

Louisville Leopard Percussionists
The Louisville Leopard Percussionists are a performing ensemble of approximately 45 student musicians, ages 7 to 12, living in and around Louisville,. Each student learns and acquires proficiency on several instruments, such as marimbas, xylophone, vibraphone, drum set, timbales, congas, bongos and piano. Award-winning elementary school teacher Diane Downs started her first percussion ensemble, The Fabulous Leopard Percussionists, as a volunteer activity after she found some old instruments in a storage closet in the school where she taught in Louisville.

Familiar rhymes are remembered for a lifetime because of rhythmic patterns. Led by Louisville Orchestra Director of Education and Community Engagement Deborah Sunya Moore, this workshop explores rhythmic patterns through drumming and chanting. All students will have an opportunity to play a percussion instrument and help create a Rhythmic Rhyme performance for the whole group.

Explore the basic principles of modern dance with Governor's School for the Arts faculty member Theresa Bautista in a beginning/intermediate level class. Black Diamond Choir
The Black Diamond Choir was organized in 1969 and is the student gospel group at University of Louisville. In the spring of 2000, history was made when BDC was featured in its first International concert at RAF Croughton Air Force Base, located just outside London, England. The one hundred member choir continues to represent the University of Louisville at least twice a month in the community at various churches and civic organizations.
